Driving in the UK

To be able to drive in the UK you must have a suitable driving licence, and also the Law requires you to have at least a minimum of a third party liability insurance. Your Stansted airport car hire company will insure you for this purpose. Normally they will provide fully comprehensive insurance with an excess liability in the case of an accident. This excess can be wavered with an additional premium this is called LDW or Loss Damage Waiver. Normally you must be at least 21 years of age (a surcharge may be needed for young drivers).
You will need to present a Driving license issued in your own name and your country of residence.

You will also require a current credit card and in some instances a second form of identification for the hire of luxury vehicles. A deposit is secured on the credit card sometimes for fuel and damage insurance. Vehicles are normally supplied with a full tank of fuel and they are required to be returned the same.

Some important notes

  • Please remember to check the condition of your car hire vehicle upon pickup and identify any dents or scratches that are visible and not noted on the car hire documents. Please point these out to a member of staff and amend the said documents.
  • Get a member of staff to check the vehicle when returning to make sure no addition damage has taken place. Remember that in the UK we drive on the left hand side of the road unlike the rest of Europe.
  • Make sure you have details of the emergency services and the Car hire depot details in case of an emergency.
  • In case of additional drivers remember to inform the Car hire company upon receipt of the vehicle additional premiums are normally required.
  • If dropping off outside normal hours you may be required to pay an additional premium.
  • Please note you are not normally allowed to drive the hire vehicle in to another country without the prior authorisation of the Hire Company.

  • Motorway speed limits unless otherwise stated are 70 MPH or 112 KPH
  • Most major A roads speed limits are stated normally between 40 to 60 MPH
  • Urban areas in and around towns normally 30 MPH
  • In you need to call the emergency services in the event of an accident Police and Ambulance services you can dial 999. Do not move vehicle until the emergency services arrive.
  • When booking your Stansted hire car please give them your inbound flight details in case of delays.
  • Please leave plenty of time for your return journey as major delays may be possible especially around the M25 and M!! Junctions.
