Famous for its canals, cobbled streets, cafes and easy-going
atmosphere, the Dutch city of Amsterdam is one of the most popular destinations
for a weekend away or a short break.
The low-cost airline easyJet
operates up to three flights daily each way between London Stansted and
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The flight time is just over an hour.
Schiphol Airport is one of the busiest in the world and is situated 18
km (11 miles) from the city
centre. There is a cheap train service between Schiphol and Centraal
station
that runs every quarter of an hour and takes around 15-25 minutes. Bus

Places of interest in Amsterdam include:
- Anne Frank House This is one of Amsterdam’s most well-known tourist attractions
with over 80,000 visitors a year. It commemorates the life of Anne Frank,
the Jewish teenager who kept a diary while hidden away from the Nazis with
her family in the attic of the house. The Frank family was betrayed in
1944 and sent to the concentration camps, where only Anne’s father Otto
survived. He returned to the house, discovered the diaries and had them

- The Rijksmuseum Opened in 1885, the Rijksmuseum has a collection of
works from 17th century Dutch painters including Rembrandt and Vermeer.
The most famous piece on display is probably Rembrandt’s ‘The Night
Watch’.
- Van Gogh Museum With around 200 paintings
and 500 drawings, the Van Gogh Museum is a must for lovers of the famous
Dutch master. Some of his best works are on show here including ‘The Potato-eaters’,
‘The Yellow House in Arles’ and ‘Starry Night’.
- Rembrandt House Art lovers are spoilt for choice in
Amsterdam, and Rembrandt House
celebrates the life of one of Holland’s most famous artists who lived
in this house between 1639 and 1658. Highlights include a collection of
Rembrandt’s work and a reconstruction of his 17th century studio.
