London Stansted to Jerez Airport
Jerez in southern Spain is famous throughout the world for its sherry, with many well-known brands located here. It is also renowned for its Andalacian horses and flamenco. Ryanair (ryanair.com) flies twice daily each way between London Stansted and Jerez with three flights every Saturday and Sunday. The airport is situated just 7km (4 miles) from the Jerez city centre, and is easily accesible by both bus and taxi. The introduction of Ryanair flights to Jerez Airport has seen a large rise in passenger numbers. Consequently there is now a new bus service from the airport to the city centre and the nearby city of Cadiz. A single ticket to Jerez costs less than a euro. A taxi journey to the centre costs about 12 euros.The city of Jerez de la Frontera to give it its full title (de la Frontera indicates the city was on the frontier of Christian and Moorish Spain between the 11th and 15th centuries) is also ideally placed for the Costa de la Luz.
Places and events of interest in Jerez de la Frontera include:
- Feria de Caballo (Horse Fair). Taking place in the first half of May, thisweek-long fair is one of the biggest spectacles in Andalucia. Parades of horses with their riders dressed in traditional clothes pass through the town, and there is also much music and dancing. The Jerez motorcycle Grand Prix usually takes place around the same time.
- Old quarter. Like many cities in Andalucia, Jerez has a strong Moorish influence. The Alcazar dates from the 11th and 12th centuries and houses the Arab Baths and a mosque converted to a chapel. Don’t miss a visit to the Palacio Villavicencio whose tower contains a cameraobscura from where you can enjoy a superb view of Jerez.
- Bodegas. No visit to Jerez would be complete without a trip to one of the many Bodegas - wineries where sherry is stored to allow it to mature. Check with the Jerez tourist office (webjerez.com) for a complete listing. One bodega that features an English-language tour is Sandeman.
- Costa de la Luz. Much quieter than the neigbouring Costa del Sol, the ‘Coast of Light’ boasts superb, clean, white sandy beaches and a few small towns and villages. There are buses from Jerez to the resorts of Tarifa and Barbate.
