London Stansted to Vitoria AirportVitoria-Gasteiz is capital of the Alava province in northern Spain and is also the seat of the Basque government. Founded in the 12th century and built on the site of the ancient town of Gasteiz, Vitoria later became wealthy through the wool and iron trades. Today, it is a pleasant city with a well preserved old quarter.
Flights from London Stansted to Vitoria Airport are operated by Ryanair. The airport is around 8km (5 miles) from the centre of Vitoria. Autobuses Alegria operates a bus service from the airport to several hotels in Vitoria. The journey time is about 25 minutes. There is another bus service operated by Autobuses La Union which connects Vitoria Airport with the city centre's main bus station. The journey time is around 25 minutes and a single ticket costs 3 euros (£1 is approximately equal to 1.45 euros). The taxi fare from the airport to Vitoria centre is between 15 and 17 euros.
Places of interest in Vitoria include:
- Old Town. The Old Town (Ciudad Vieja) of Vitoria is centred on the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca which features, in the centre of the square, a monument to the Duke of Wellington’s victory over the French in the 1813 Battle of Vitoria. Close by is the Iglesia de San Miguel, a Gothic church which is entered through a 14th century portal. A small niche in the east end of the church used to contain the machete on which Vitoria’s rulers swore to uphold the law. The arcaded Plaza de España, built in the 18th century, is one of the city’s most attractive squares and is fronted by a number of fine cafes.
- Fine Arts Museum. The Palacio de Agusti houses this museum featuring painting and sculpture from the 14th century onwards. Exhibits include a collection of work from 16th century Flemish artists, a section dedicated to Basque painting, and contemporary Spanish art from the likes of Miro and Tapies.
- Museo de Naipes (Museum of Cards). A famous playing card factory was established in Vitoria by Heraclio Fournier in 1868 and the grandson of the founder assembled a vast collection of cards which was bought by the town council in 1986. The museum now has more than 15,000 packs dating from the 14th century to the present day. The cards feature many different themes including politics, wars and revolutions and there is even a set of tarot cards designed by the great Spanish painter, Salvador Dali.
- Museum of Arms and Armour. This fine collection traces the history of Basque weaponry from prehistoric axes to early 20th century guns. There is also an exhibit of medieval armour, including a Japanese suit of armour from the 17th century, and items from the Peninsular War and the 1813 Battle of Vitoria.
- Archaeological Museum. This half-timbered 16th century house displays an number of finds from excavations in the local area including 4000-year-old dolmens, pieces of Roman sculpture and artefacts from the Middle Ages.
